The 10 golden tips to improve your English easily
1. Read English books
… but choose something that interests you! Being regularly engaged in a language is a crucial part of language learning. In order to make it nice for your own benefit, you should select a book which you like.
2. Learn 10 new words every day
If you actively pay attention to English words that you do not know (on TV or on the internet) you will notice that there are a lot of them. If you then look up and write down the meaning of 10 words every day for a month, you will have learned no fewer than 300 new words within a month!
3. Watch English movies without subtitles
Without the Dutch translation of English, you have to actively listen and translate and you are thus very actively working on the English language. Do films take you too long? Then watch YouTube videos such as Ted Talks. Super interesting!
4. Use apps
The Appstore and Playstore are full of apps that help you improve your English in fun ways. Ideal for a train ride or if you have to wait. Then you don’t even have to make time for it! Examples of useful apps are Duolingo or Babbel.
5. Talk to yourself in the mirror … in English!
Okay, it might sound a little weird. But I promise you: this will really help you get used to speaking in English, even though it may be separated at the beginning.
6. Post-its
Post-its are ideal for learning the English translation of objects around you. Write the translation on a post-it sheet and stick it on the relevant object. In addition to making your house a lot more colorful, you will see the translation so often that it will be engraved in your memory. Useful. yet?
7. Go to London for a weekend – alone!
One way in which you cannot get out of the English language is to immerse yourself in it. In addition to being a fantastic city in London, you are also obliged to speak English: no more excuses! London a step too far? Then go to Amsterdam and pretend that you are a tourist – do commit yourself to address people in English.
8. Use practice exams to improve your reading skills
Exam texts are written in such a way that they train you in your reading skills so that you can train yourself to understand English texts better. They can be found on the internet, including the answers so that you can also check yourself!
9. Listen to an audiobook in the car
Audiobooks are ideal because you not only get to hear the correct pronunciation but unknowingly learn things like sentence structure. Take a look around on the internet to see if that book you have wanted to read for a while is also available as an audiobook!
10. Dare to make mistakes
These tips are perhaps the most important. Don’t give up when things go wrong! Teaching yourself a new language is not without trial or error, that is one guarantee. And precisely by going into the fog a few times, you also learn how not to do it.
